In a music appreciation class, a great deal of class time is spent listening to music which decreases the amount of time left for reflection and discussion. By loading the listening library into iPods and housing them at the GC&SU library where students are able to check them out, listening takes place outside of the classroom freeing up valuable class time that can better be spent discussing themes, comparing genres and the like. A student can check out an iPod from the library, listen to assigned selections while using the text notes function of the iPod to learn about the social setting and political climate of the era of composition, or read biographical information about composers and musicians. Photos that accompany the music and text bring composers to life for students as well.
