People Who Changed the World
Project Leader: Deborah Vess
Professor, History & Georgraphy

This course focuses on biographies of significant historical figures with a global and gender-inclusive focus. Students view masterworks of world cinema related to historical figures on their video iPods. These videos represent conflicting historiographical interpretations that are juxtaposed with primary source accounts, prompting critical appraisal of the figures' significance. The course is also designed to encourage active learning through assigning agency to students and fostering the student as producer of knowledge. Students develop documentaries using iMovie and the iLife suite of applications. Photos, maps, videos, music with historical themes, primary sources converted to audio, texts, and notes are distributed on the iPod for use in the documentaries. Student-produced documentaries are then vodcast over course channels for discussion in the class. Enhanced podcasts are also used to distribute instructor presentations.
